Surface Design 2009
Seen in a whole new light...

Lights, camera, action. Rare Basic partnered with lighting pioneers AVR launched The World's most powerful LED's at this year's Surface Design Show. Along with the internationally acclaimed magnIQ system, crowds at the show were wowed by the two revolutionary products.
The Surface Design Show is the only UK event to focus exclusively on interior and exterior surface solutions in building design.
With two unique products that are unrivalled in the market place, the response was over whelming from architects, interior designers and building specifiers.
"In today's climate there really needs to be a focus on hard wearing, durable and cost effective products. The LED's and magnIQ tick all these boxes, which for us makes them the way forward in this challenging yet exciting time," enthuses Gay Spanton - Briggs, director at Rare Basic. "We are confident that in time magnIQ & our lighting will dominate the market."
In 2009 logical, out-of-the-box inventions are sure to set a precedent, and for magnIQ & AVR lighting the future is bright.

First contact with Stephen Morey of MacCormac Jamieson Prichard at their London office was Oct. 2007, he had seen us at The Surface Design Show.
His brief was to design and build a new interior to an existing library building that would be unusual but practical. His idea using magnIQ was to create a curved internal wall that could be completely clear for presentation use i.e. Power point, graphics and other projected shows but could also be used for individual work stations, for the mounting of LCD screens and other 3D presentations. He then brought a team from the University to our showroom to present the product and it was received with great enthusiasm in fact during the installation the director said that he had dinned out on it many times, It was for Rare Basic now to solve the various technical problems that would arise.Firstly we had to design the panels, these needed to follow a pre-built curved wall with a radius of approx 6 metres (floor plan attached) they were also required to have concealed surround lighting. After various prototypes and site meetings we were able to overcome the problems ie to bend around the curve without kinking to use the 1.2 thickness mm steel panels with reinforced supports for the heavy weight loading required. We also had to design the magnIQ products for use on the walls these consisted of 600mm wide 300 deep shelves for movable work stations C Shape shelving support arms and brackets to support 42" LCD TV screens all of which needed to follow the curve without compromise to the strength of the product.
Rare Basic then carried out the installation which had its own problems the walls were not perfect curves but had a certain amount of flats and distortion but because of the panel design they were able to create their own clean curve all the components were tested and approved.
Quote:
"We specified Rare Basics magnIQ wall system after seeing the product demonstrated at a product show in London. It was a perfect innovative solution to the idea we had for a 'Creative Wall' at a project at the University of Warwick Library. The product we understand is typically used for retail but we think has huge potential to be used in many other sectors such as education and housing projects.
We have been very impressed with both the product and Rare Basics pro-activeness during the project and would highly recommend them."

Gold - Best Freestanding Display, Sponsored by Centaur Exhibitions
Some members of the judging panel Confessed an urge to go shopping for shoes while judging this entry. "This gets lots of ticks," was the prevailing view of this funky and versatile fashion display. Designed for use in-store and in window displays, the freestanding unit needs to be able to accommodate long boots, handbags and accessories as well as footwear. An acrylic mirror finish reflects products to create an appearance or product density, and edge-lit shelves mean maximum visibility.
Silver - Innovation in Product, Sponsored by Perspex Distribution
This versatile and sleek display unit impressed the judging panel by taking a new approach to an age-old problem: how best to display shoes. This solution copes with a broad range of products and shows them all to their best effect. The client has placed constant repeat orders for the display.
